Burst Pipe? What to Do in the First 10 Minutes
A burst pipe can release hundreds of gallons in an hour. The first ten minutes decide how much damage your home takes. This is a timed checklist — do the steps in order, and do not skip ahead to cleanup before the water is off.

Minutes 0–2: Stop the water
Find the main water shut-off valve — usually near the water meter or where the main line enters the house — and turn it clockwise until the water stops. If you do not know where it is, look now, before the next emergency: it is the single most useful thing to know about your house. If the burst is at a single fixture, shut off that fixture's valve instead. Then open a faucet at the lowest level of the house to drain pressure from the lines.
Minutes 2–4: Make it safe
If water is near electrical outlets, the electrical panel, or appliances, turn off the electricity to the affected area at the breaker panel — and do not step into standing water near electricity. If the ceiling is bulging with water, stay out from under it; a water-filled ceiling can come down. If the burst is near a gas appliance and you smell gas, leave the house and call from outside — see our gas leak guide.
Minutes 4–6: Protect what matters
Move furniture, rugs, electronics, and boxes off the floor and out of the water's path. Lift curtains. Put valuables on a table or a bed. If water is coming through a ceiling, put a bucket underneath and, if the bulge is growing, poke a small hole in the lowest point of the bulge with a screwdriver so the water drains in a controlled way instead of bringing the ceiling down.
Minutes 6–8: Document the damage
Take photos and a short video of everything: the burst pipe itself, the water, the wet floors, walls, and ceilings, and any damaged belongings. Photograph the shut-off valve and the meter too. Keep receipts for anything you buy for the cleanup. This documentation is what your insurance claim runs on — take it now, while the damage is visible, not after the cleanup.
Minutes 8–10: Call for help
Call (662) 550-8213. Tell us the pipe burst, where it is, and whether the water is off. A local emergency plumber will help you. Do not wait for morning: a burst pipe does not slow down overnight.
What NOT to do
- Do not try to patch a burst pipe with tape and hope it holds — it will not, and the delay costs more than the patch saves.
- Do not use a blowtorch or open flame to thaw a frozen pipe — that is how pipes burst and fires start.
- Do not step into standing water near electricity.
- Do not start the cleanup before the water is off — you will be mopping against a running tap.
